Aeronautics

An industry at its zenith
For decades, aeronautics has been an integral part of Aix-Marseille’s industrial history.
Around Marignane airport in particular, international leaders such as Airbus Helicopters (world’s leading manufacturer of civil helicopters*, 9,000 jobs) and Daher have helped to structure this sector of excellence.
The local aeronautics industry boasts a truly efficient and innovative ecosystem of subcontractors, equipment manufacturers, start-ups and research laboratories, as well as emblematic projects such as the Henri-Fabre technocenter.

Cinema

It’s on!
Within the Digital, Microelectronics and Creative Industries sector, cinema has become a flourishing industry in the Provencal metropolis in just a few years.
Marseille has become the 2nd most popular filming destination after Paris.
The Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis welcomed 430 productions for 2,180 shooting days*, including national and international feature films.
Our region’s many assets explain this success: weather conditions, a variety of natural backdrops, filming facilities and studios, the presence of trained technicians, strong support from local authorities, and excellence that is now recognized at national level. In particular, we have several winners of the “Grande Fabrique de l’Image -France 2030” award, including the unmissable Provence Studios in Martigues and Marseille, as well as several audiovisual training projects (Ateliers de l’image et du son, Kourtrajmé, La Plateforme, post-production training courses at Aix-Marseille-Université). CinéMaBase was inaugurated at the end of 2023 by the French Minister of Culture.

Energy

The sun, the wind… new sources of energy.
In Aix-Marseille, the process of decarbonizing energy is already underway!
Few people know it, but we’re home to the world’s 4th cleantech technology park. The Technopôle de l’Arbois Méditerranée boosts an ecosystem of cutting-edge startups in environmental technologies, recognized every year at CES in Las Vegas.
In Cadarache, the Cité des Énergies actively contributes to research and technology transfer in the fields of solar energy and biotechnologies, while ITER is one of the world’s most ambitious projects in the field of decarbonized energy. In fact, 35 countries are involved in the construction of a device designed to demonstrate that fusion (energy from the sun and stars) can be used on a large scale as a non-CO2 emitting energy source to produce electricity.
For Aix-Marseille-Provence, it’s also a question of turning the corner on energy transition, for the sake of the climate and the well-being of local residents, but also for the modernization and sovereignty of industry, particularly in Fos-sur-Mer. Thanks to applications from ArcelorMittal and Piicto in particular, the Bouches-du-Rhône region has been selected to benefit from massive government support for the “decarbonization” component of the Plan France 2030**. Deos, the floating offshore wind turbine project, was recently approved. And with Carbon, Gravithy, H2V, Air Products, etc., no less than 11 to 15 billion euros of investment could be made by major international groups wishing to set up in our region, enabling the decarbonization of industry and the creation of 14,000 additional jobs in the Fos ZIP***.

Maritime

A maritime and logistics sector driven by the strategic position of the Port of Marseille Fos.
Marseille has been a major player in international trade since antiquity. Marseille-Fos, now France’s No. 1 port and the Mediterranean’s No. 3, makes the most of its geostrategic position as the gateway to Southern Europe and a global logistics hub.
With 72 million metric tons of goods traded, the Marseille-Fos industrial-port cluster is organized around 1,570 companies and employs 42,600 people* in maritime and port activities, as well as in heavy industry, services and logistics.
Our maritime industry also stands out for its passenger transport, with around 4 million passengers a year** (regular ferry lines and cruises), generating jobs and local economic spin-offs.
Innovative and making a profound shift towards sustainable development, the Port of Marseille Fos is the first port in France to offer electrical connections for ships at quayside, and to welcome ships running on liquefied natural gas.

Health

A land of distinction in health research and innovation.
As France’s 2nd-largest clinical trials center*, Aix-Marseille has become a leading destination for innovative health and wellness companies throughout Europe.
Aix-Marseille-Provence is particularly well known in the fields of
immunology and the fight against cancer, infectiology (in particular HIV, tuberculosis and malaria) and neuroscience (work on Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, etc.).
Strongly supported by local authorities and a rich training offer, our healthcare sector draws its strength and power of innovation from its ecosystem, which brings together players of excellence – academic research, public institutions, startups and private companies – promoting innovation and the transfer of skills for concrete applications.
Organizations such as Aix-Marseille-Université, AP-HM, Technopôle de Grand Luminy, Marseille Immunopôle and Eurobiomed play a key role in the dynamism of this job-creating sector.

Digital

The new digital Eldorado.
In recent years, Marseille’s geostrategic position as the “Euro-Mediterranean capital” has made it the preferred connection point for the undersea fiber optic cables that carry data and interconnect the Internet, telephone and television networks between Europe and Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
Against a backdrop of global competition, Aix-Marseille-Provence is doing brilliantly, soon becoming the 5th international digital hub* with 23 cables connected and 4.5 billion people connected.
This position as a digital hub favors the development and establishment of structures in the tech sector, and more broadly in the digital and creative industries.
